Duane B.2024-10-31 Insightful and Practical Guide for Lean, Agile and VSM I received an advance reading copy from the publisher, given my interest in this topic, and I’d like to share my thoughts. The Lean-Agile Way is a great guide and roadmap on how to adopt Lean and Agile principles. It provides a deep dive into the mindset and methodology that enable businesses to be more adaptable, efficient, and responsive in today's environment. This book a valuable resource for all roles from leaders at all levels to practitioners looking to drive successful change in their organizations. Given that the book starts by exploring the fundamentals of both Lean and Agile, the Lean-Agile Way provides a strong foundation for understanding Lean-Agile principles. Additionally, the authors place a heavy emphasis on leadership, mindset, and organizational culture, which is important for any transformation. It is apparent the authors are not academics but rather practitioners with years of practical, pragmatic experience. They put a great deal of information into this book including Lean, Agile, and Value Stream Management principles that are clear and easy to understand. While there are many aspects of the book that I appreciated, one example is building in little things like "knowledge checks" via Summary, Questions and Answers at the end of each section. I also appreciated the agnostic approach as too often we get bogged down in the methodology and not looking at the principles. This book is structured into four parts, progressing systematically from foundational concepts to advanced strategies for organizational transformation. A Lean-Agile transformation requires more than just following certain practices or implementing new tools; it demands a shift in thinking. The book stresses the importance of customer-centricity, continuous improvement, and empowering teams while outlining key principles that guide Lean-Agile transformations, such as respecting people, delivering value quickly, and ensuring quality at every junction. The book also emphasizes that leadership plays a crucial role in any Lean-Agile transformation. Leaders must model the behaviors they want to see in their teams, such as openness, transparency, and adaptability. The Lean-Agile Way is a great read if you are looking to understand and adopt Lean and Agile principles. The book balances the theoretical foundation with the practical steps necessary for a successful transformation. There is a reference in the book regarding "finding shelter" by "Living in a Lean-Agile House" via the "House of Lean-Agile". Phrasing like "finding shelter" connects to the reader and is written in easy to understand terms. While it may not provide detailed step-by-step instructions, it offers a wealth of knowledge on how to think about and approach Lean-Agile transformation. Selvi A2024-10-29 Applying Lean and Agile in your Organization I received an advance reading copy from the publisher, given my interest in this topic, and I’d like to share my thoughts on the book.“The Lean-Agile Way” merges Lean and Agile concepts from their manufacturing and software origins, positioning IT as a monetizing mechanism with tools like Value Stream Management (VSM). The emphasis on reducing waste is not about cutting staff but eliminating non-value-added work to optimize workforce utilization. This was a key takeaway from the book for me as I have seen fragmented value streams kill productivityThe authors introduce new terminologies such as BLAST (Basic Lean Agile Solutions Team), a framework and pattern language designed to help organizations coordinate the activities of multiple teams involved in product delivery. Another concept is BASE (Business Agility System for the Enterprise), a conceptual model and pattern language aimed at orchestrating the activities of multiple teams in product delivery.Additionally, the book expands the application of Agile principles beyond software development, demonstrating their relevance in various business contexts. Spikael Schnefly2024-10-29 Modern lean/agile I received an advance copy of the book. I have good things to say about it but I haven't had time to write my review. I will though later and replace this with it. Michael Shost2024-10-28 An in depth guide bridges the gap between Lean principles & Agile methodologies "The Lean-Agile Way" is an in depth guide that brilliantly bridges the gap between Lean principles and Agile methodologies. For leaders and practitioners alike, this book offers practical insights into optimizing processes, improving team collaboration, and delivering faster, more effective results. The author expertly distills complex concepts into actionable strategies, making it accessible for those new to Agile as well as seasoned professionals seeking to refine their practices. What sets this book apart is its focus on real-world application. It’s not just theory; it's packed with examples and case studies that demonstrate how Lean-Agile principles can drive meaningful change in any organization. The integration of Lean thinking with Agile methodologies creates a framework that is both adaptable and robust, ensuring teams can continuously improve while staying aligned with business goals. The writing style is clear, engaging, and to the point, which makes it an easy read without sacrificing depth. Whether you're looking to transform your organization’s approach to project management or simply want to enhance your understanding of Lean-Agile practices, The Lean-Agile Way is an indispensable resource. Highly recommended for anyone committed to fostering a culture of innovation, efficiency, and agility. Vinod Dhiman2024-10-28 Great book for Agile transformation. Given my interest in this topic, I received an advance reading copy from the publisher, and I’d like to share my thoughts. Reviewing this book was a great experience. I like the flow of the content and how authors have explained the critical bottlenecks while dealing with Agile frameworks. KSon2024-10-17 An Incredible Resource! Lean, Agile, and Value Stream Management. We are given the basic building blocks and then those concepts are integrated to provide comprehensive technical, yet quite readable integrations to result in optimization of productivity, efficiency, and quality.Setting priorities, delivering customer-centric value, following strategy and prioritization. It’s a lot. But the book is well laid out. It describes what you should be learning every step of the way. Each chapter ends with a summary, questions and answers, and further reading suggestions. If you buy the print version, you are welcome to a free download of the ebook for ease of use. You will learn many new acronyms, but again, it is well written, logically organized and easy to digest. Helpful visuals add to its readability. I see this being a resource you will revisit over and over.**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book** Mark2024-10-16 Great reference material every business person should know “The Lean-Agile Way” is a best practice guide for developing products (of all kinds). As a professional software developer, consultant, and coach, I’ve applied these practices in various forms for the last 15 years and can wholeheartedly stand behind the guidance provided. It may be confirmation bias, but I’ve always been successful employing these tactics. The concepts discussed are incredibly accurate, frameworks are designed makes them easy to remember and the visuals are easy to follow.Pros: GREAT content, memorable frameworks, and simple visuals.Cons: Reads like a text book. Could use a little background storytelling to make the book more interesting to read. Tathagat Varma2024-10-16 Very comprehensive book that describes the foundational ideas in easy-to-follow language. I recently had the opportunity to check out the book "The Lean-Agile Way", authored by long-time experts from the field - Cecil Rupp, Richard Knaster, Steve Pereira, and Al Shalloway. While there are many books on the vast body of knowledge on #Lean thinking and #Agile methodology, and some that combine both, they mostly struggle to integrate the ideas holistically or become too prescriptive. In contrast, I found the book an easy read. It not only introduced the ideas from both Lean and Agile in a simple manner but also integrated them seamlessly, making it a useful reading for any practitioner and especially useful for those getting introduced to the field's big ideas and how to apply them.I especially liked the deep focus on #ValueStreamManagement, which is the holy grail of many product development endeavors, especially how they realize the business value, and the authors have also considered how these ideas apply in the context of the #digital world. The focus on how to apply ideas for product-oriented business transformations using a Basic Lean-Agile Solution Team ("BLAST") to build a Business Agility System for the Enterprise ("BASE") and enhance decision-making and implementing strategies for organizational transformation could be very useful for those looking to scale lean and agile practices from isolated agile teams to across the entire organization. Greg Acuna2024-10-16 Great Insights, Lots of Detail As a Project Manager I have always tried to bring a hybrid approach to fit each project, company and team. "The Lean-Agile Way" embraces the advantages to this philosophy of finding best practices from a wide range of sources from automotive manufacturing to software development. The book is an easy read with plenty of detail and easy to understand graphics which can be helpful from beginners to the most advanced leaders looking to increase efficiency, decrease costs and better server customers. The deep dive into both the histories and current state of affairs in both Lean and Agile techniques gives readers a firm background into the underlying uses of both schools, but the real value in the book is how the authors guide us through how they can be combined. Initially, the merging of the two seems counter-intuitive since Lean has historically been used for complex processes, like automotive manufacturing, which have well defined set roadmaps compared to ground up customer-centric Agile software development where the product changes can be so extreme as to require extreme pivots.Bringing the two philosophies together can turbo-charge projects, increase customer satisfaction and decrease waste both in terms of managment processes and materials. The book is well organized and easy to use as a daily reference while organizing, educating teams and during project/product developement. Curious to see how various industries embrace the philosophies of the book. Ana G. Jimenez2024-10-15 Agile, Lean and VSM relationships and interactions clearly explained This book is clearly written, easy to read and very comprehensive. It is very instructional, providing clear relationship between Agile, Lean and Value Stream Mapping. It has a focus on Information Technoloy (IT) and the Lean-Agile transformation. But this can be applicable to other business units. Each chapter provides questions and more references, if you want to learn more of certain topics. It is able to clearly establish the relationships between Value Stream Mapping, Agile and Lean, providing a good base for deploying and implementing Agile, Lean and Value Stream Mapping across the organization.
